Amon Amarth – Fillmore Auditorium – Denver, CO

The pit (aka “mosh pit”) is a staple at metal shows. But when you go to an Amon Amarth show, that beloved chaotic cyclone takes on a slightly different form.

Denver’s Fillmore Auditorium was the latest stop on the Swedish band’s “Great Heathen Army” tour. And despite the venue being at near capacity, a good chunk of the crowd were able to drop to the floor at front man Johann Hegg’s command and pretend as though they had been transported onto a Viking ship.

Right before the first riffs of “Put Your Back Into the Oar” rang through the air, Hegg declared “Denver, you know what to do.” The chaos mellowed, a large circle of fans sat down and the row pit commenced. As the mass pulled their imaginary oars through the air, they chanted “Row, row, row!”. The effort was not lost on Hegg who complimented the crowd on what he described as “one of the best pits he’s on this tour.”

The evening’s set included several cuts from their 2022 studio album (after which the tour was named) including the title track, “Oden Owns You” and “Get in the Ring.” Some other face-melting anthems in the mix were “The Pursuit of Vikings.” “Guardians of Asgaard,” and “First Kill.” Check out our photos of the action below:
