The National – Mission Ballroom – Denver, CO

You never know what you’ll get when you go see The National. At least as far as a set list is concerned. Partway into their second show at Denver’s Mission Ballroom Saturday, front man Matt Berninger asked the crowd who had been there the night before. After a resounded yes of claps and cheers, he announced “we’ll be playing some different stuff tonight. Hope that’s ok.”

A few perennial staples predictably made their way into the show, but the real highlights of the night included an opening three song run off their latest album, First Two Pages of Frankenstein. Along with a number of deeper cuts such as “This Isn’t Helping,” “Afraid of Everyone,” “Send for Me” and “Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks.” In total, the band made their way through 26 songs. Mixing it up along the way and demonstrating why spending two night’s in a row at Mission Ballroom might just be worth it.
