Pixies – Fiddler’s Green Amphitheatre – Greenwood Village, CO

You never know what you’ll get a Pixies show. At least when it comes to the set list. Of course there will be no shortage of legendary alt-rock, dark and moody lighting or pointed lyrics. But the line-up of songs at any given show is put together on the fly. And true to form, the Pixies mixed it up during their latest stop at Fiddler’s Green Amphitheatre in Colorado.

The band are notorious for little to no interludes or stage banter between songs. Once they’re playing, they’re playing. “U-Mass” started things off and was quickly followed by other early cuts including “Wave of Mutilation” and “Isla de Encanta.” From there it was a unique assemblage that featured everything from the new “Vegas Suite” to their cover of Jesus and Mary Chain’s “Head On.” Some classics made it into the mix too, including “Hey,” “Gouge Away” and “Where is My Mind?”.

Drummer David Lovering describes the spontaneous sets as an “adventure.” “It makes things interesting. It’s something we developed over time and we enjoy doing it.” It was clear that the fans who came out Friday night thoroughly enjoyed it too.
