Each album has been crafted with such love and razor-sharp intensity over the years, and one shouldn’t expect less of Gold & Grey. Since the previous release of Purple in 2015, Peter Adams (guitar) left the band and has since been replaced by Gina Gleason. Her introduction into the band has injected not only new energy, but completely new dynamics in the songwriting and direction of the band’s sound.
The LP’s sound is similar, and yet, still in stark contrast from previous albums. Yes, the sludgy sound is still around, but they continue to shift focus toward post and progressive metal, classic heavy metal, and even hard rock. Along with the slight change in stylistic direction, Gleason’s vocal contributions and harmonies with John Baizley (guitar, vocals) create a new, and contrasting sound that seems to really push the music further than before. Songs such as “I’d Do Anything” and “Cold Blooded Angels” are distinctly new in sound, and belong in this new era of fresh blood.
Gold & Grey is but a tip of the iceberg with what the new incarnation of Baroness can do. This excellent album is an explicit reminder of the sheer amount of talent and creativity that inhabit each member. The emotion that is shared throughout each note and beat is inherently, and intentionally, visceral and vibrant.
Final Thoughts
A refreshing and updated sound from the band has provided a record that is miles ahead of their previous album, and breaks new ground. A must listen!
