Extreme / Living Colour – Ogden Theatre – Denver, CO

Love was in the air Wednesday night when Extreme made good on a promise to return to Denver (after postponing last year’s show). It was Valentine’s Day. And despite chilly temps, eager fans had lined up in front of the Ogden Theatre well before doors were set to open. They had been waiting months for this tour to come back around.

Living Colour started the evening off with a timely cover of MC5’s “Kick out the Jams.” Followed by a short, but solid set that included a Prince cover and a handful of hits like “Time’s Up” and “Glamour Boys.” They finished things off with their anthem, “Cult of Personality”, a song that seems to have only grown more relevant as time has gone by.

Extreme have been at it for a while. But their energy and and musical chops haven’t waned. The band put together a 24 song set list for the night that sampled from a variety of albums, including their most recent studio release, Six. A few highlights from the evening included “#REBEL”, a medley of five songs from their first album, “Am I Ever Gonna Change” and “Get the Funk Out.”

If there was a theme for the night it would have been gratitude. Throughout Extreme’s two-hour set, guitarist Nuno Bettencourt expressed how appreciative he was for everyone there – at one point saying, “We thank you for your kindness. It isn’t taken for granted.” After closing out the show with an encore of two songs from their latest album, Nuno asked if everyone would be willing to take a “family photo” with the band. The sold-out crowd was happy to oblige. Demonstrating just how grateful they also were that the band had finally made their way back to Colorado.
