A Dark and Stormy Night at The Marquis Theater with Abbath

A cold and menacing storm descended on Denver Tuesday evening. Both literally and figuratively. Heavy winds were blowing around a mix of rain and snow outside Denver’s Marquis Theater while another storm was brewing just inside. Black metal veterans Abbath had just taken the stage. And even though the venue was packed, a swirling pit of black, denim and hair took over the floor, stopping only when the last guitar riff rang out.

Classic Immortal songs made up the evening’s set. Blashyrkh, described as a “demon-and-battle-filled” realm, inspired many of the songs including “Sons of Northern Darkness,” Years of Silent Sorrow” and “Damn in Black.” Themes of dark woods and foggy landscapes seemed like a perfect fit for the chilly night. While the trademark black and white makeup covering the faces of all the members only added to the ominous vibe.
