Powerwolf – Ogden Theatre – Denver, CO

Powerwolf fans started lining up in the early morning hours at the Ogden Theatre Saturday. Some brought folding chairs and snacks. While others were already decked out with painted faces and elaborate costumes. It would be a long, hot day ahead. But the payoff would be a front and center spot for the band’s self-described “heavy metal mass.”

There’s no shortage of religious (or perhaps sacrilegious) themes at a Powerwolf show. The stage resembles the sanctuary or a church, mic stands are makeshift swords topped with crosses and a swinging thurible of incense frequently appears. The band make it clear that they aren’t religious though. Rather, they identify as “metalists.” Or as Matthew Greywolf describes “metal is my religion. Look at all these people, what unites them? I can tell you, it’s fu@king metal.”

The sold-out crowd got it’s money’s worth as the band played through a nearly 20 song set. Some of the highlight’s included “Sinners of the Seven Seas,” “Demons are a Girl’s Best Friend,” “Alive or Undead” and “Sanctified With Dynamite.” Check out our photos from the evening below:
